She's a wild one, that child. Trying to stay awake all night when her girlfriends are sleeping over, inventing new ways to push each other to the limit of exhaustion. Pillow fights, scary stories, pixi sticks, late night peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, giggles... lots of giggles. Her mother shushes them, finger to her lips, and tries to be stern. She urges them to go to bed, because she knows what that child will be like in the morning. But she doesn't push. She remembers what it was like to be ten; she remembers the giddy rush of trying to accomplish something "so grown up" as staying awake all night. She'll go check on them in a few hours, and she'll put them to bed when their sugar highs finally crash.

She's always refusing to eat her vegetables, and doesn't want to do her homework. *shakes her head* Typical girl-child. She has a will of iron and thinks she can do anything she sets her mind to. She doesn't mind the clothes her mother buys her, but relishes the looks of amused bewilderment when she wears mis-matched socks and clashing colors. She is her own self, and will not be labeled with the crowds.

She makes her mother throw her hands up in exasperation, but she has an embrace that will always warm the heart. She tries so hard to be grown up, but there's no denying the sweet glow of innocence when she's asleep in your arms. "She's a good girl," her mama says. "She's still my little girl, who needs a cuddle when she's had a bad dream."

She's a wild child, and I can see her.
